The Zanger Parlay
Former swimming-pool contractor Dan Zanger must hold a trading record by having parlayed $10,775 into $18 million in the 18 months between June 1998 and December 1999. He bought CMGI in early January 1999 at $118, rode it to $305, then sold at $138* (*post 2 for 1 stock split) - after which the stock dropped to $87. The trade netted him more than 210 percent in four days. Eventually, the prop trader's nest egg grew to $42 million - which shows how career changes can make the best trades of all time.

What He trades: No commodities, currency plays or black-box intelligence for this self-made prop legend. Instead, he trades mostly Nasdaq stocks. On the surface, Zanger is a purist, using chart patterns and more chart patterns to find his prey.
How He Trades: What is he looking for? "Frisky stocks that are starting to perk," he says. He takes a high-intensity "180-mph, inches from the wall" margined 2-to-1 approach to trading. In early 1998, Internet stocks exploded, and as they cooled in late 1999, biotechs took off. They ran for six months, then fiber-optic stocks took over in 2000 and cooked until Nortel preannounced a shortfall in earnings.

Dan Zanger has made his presence known on the Internet through his website, www.chartpattern.com, which, I might add, offers a rather hip presentation. The animated charts with background music and the occasional beeps that sound at buy or sell points, the bright colors and interesting clipart, if nothing else, make this an enjoyable site to use.

TW: How do you find your stocks to buy and has anything changed over the past few years on how you do that?
Dan: Nothing has really changed on how I find my stocks. For example if anything is up a dollar or two for the day I want to know about it. I look at anything going across a ticker tape on CNBC or Bloomberg or any programs where a stock is up a buck or more. On interesting stocks I'll see what the pattern looks like then I'll go into my Daily Graphs. I get the Daily Graph chart books every weekend. I can also go online. I look at the fundamentals to see how much the earnings are up.
